Volunteers stay in a village with a Nepali Family and help with School and Community Maintenance. You will be involved in painting, building and
repairs. During this period volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in local festivals and get the opportunity to exchange their culture.
Volunteers on this program work and stay in a rural village and either join an existing project or conduct some research into the villagers’ environmental needs and create a project to meet those needs. Where required, volunteers have access to Nepali interpreters to assist them with their work. Recently completed projects include a communal toilet, compost bins, health seminars, health camps and distribution of jute shopping bags to cut down on plastic waste. Future planned projects include energy efficiency, waste management, nutrition and agricultural improvements.
The program is currently operating in a few villages in the east of the Kathmandu Valley and Chitwan and we are actively recruiting volunteers to expand this program.
There is a wide variety of volunteer skills that can be put to good use in this program. A basic understanding of recycling, environmental issues, health care, first aid or project management would allow you to make a good contribution. The most important thing is to have a passion to change things for the better. However, it is essential that you seek to understand the community before taking action. You will need to be able to work well in a team and bridge the gap between western culture and rural Nepalis.
